The 1841 England Census

The British Government took the 1841 Census on the 6th of June 1841. This page summarises, on a household basis, all of the Inkson information from the 1841 records for England that has been found to date.

The 1841 Census was relatively simple : no relationship to the head of household is shown and the where born question was limited to either a tick, Y(es), N(o) or 'N(ot) K(nown)' in the 'Same County' column or an S(cotland), I(reland) or F(oreign parts) in the alternate column. 'Local' is used below to indicate the same county and 'Other' to indicate another county in England or Wales.

In the table below, the PRO Reference is a link to an image of the relevant page of the census. A new tab will open when you click on the link, just close it to return to this page.

John InksonM35LocalInd.Who is this John, born in Greater London in about 1806? There is a John Inkson born to Lewis and Harriet [see below] on 10 Oct 1809 baptised at St Martin in the Fields but that would make him 31 at the time of the census

Harriett InksonF60LocalInd.Who is this Harriett, born in Greater London in about 1781? Is John, above, her son? It seems very likely that she is the wife of a Lewis Inkson and he is probably the son of Lewis and Elizabeth Inkson baptised in Knockando, Moray [Scotland] on 17 Jan 1773. A Lewis Inkson of Alexander Square, Chelsea was buried at Holy Trinity, Brompton on 1 Oct 1836 aged 63
Elizabeth InksonF35LocalblankAn Elizabeth Mary sic was born to Lewis and Harriot sic Inkson on 11 Mar 1799 and baptised at St Anne's Soho, London on 14 Jul that year but that would make her 42 at the time of the census. An Elizabeth May sic Inkson, spinster of Robert St, married a John Willisford, widower of Sloane St, at St Luke's Chelsea on 9 May 1843. Her father is noted as Lewis Inkson, Gentleman and two of the witnesses were Ann Inkson and Jno Inkson
Ann InksonF25LocalblankThere is an Ann Inkson born to Lewis and Harriet on 14 Nov 1811 baptised at St Martin in the Fields but that would make her 29 at the time of the census

Susan InksonF45LocalillegibleWho is this Susan, born in Norfolk in about 1796? There is no record of a Susan Inkson being born in the late 18th century so she probably married into the family although there is no known marriage record that would fit
