Major changes to the domain have been taking place throughout 2020. Much of them are invisible to the casual observer as the code behind the scenes is brought up to the latest standards but there are also important changes as more information is found and previous assumptions are adjusted. This page was introduced in mid-September to help you make sense of it all.
6 January 2022 : The 1921 English census data was released online today so work has started on a new census page for that year. It will take quite some time to complete.
11 April 2021 : There is now a slideshow in the 17th and 18th century section to help you understand the story of the Norfolk Inksons in those centuries, starting with the George born in about 1650.
1 February 2021 : Work has now finished on the branches of Alice Walters, the next child of Thomas Harborow and Martha Inkson after William Alfred. She married Thomas Plumb.
To complete the work, additions were made to the English census records for 1891, 1901 and 1939 [register].
27 January 2021 : Work has now finished on the branches of Martha Harriett, the next child of Thomas Harborow and Martha Inkson after William Alfred. She married Henry Helsdon.
To complete the work, additions were made to the English census records for 1891, 1901 and 1911.
21 January 2021 : Work has now finished on the branches below the 1801 Inkson - Harborow other than the [many] branches below William b. ABT 1804. The work includes the two cousin marriages where Harborow men married Inkson women so the Harborow tree has been extended backward as far William b. ABT 1725, known as William III, the common Harborow ancestor.
7 January 2021 : Following on from the announcement immediately below, today the pages for the second son of Thomas Harborow and Martha Inkson, William Alfred, and his descendents - the New Zealand Inksons - are published. This is the introduction page for William Alfred and his wife Mary née White. This part of the 'English' tree has flourished, albeit in the antipodes.
In completing the work it was necessary to add a New Zealand page in the Trees and Indices section.
28 December 2020 : recent work has concentrated on bringing the pages for the descendents of Thomas Harborow and Martha Inkson up to date. Today the pages for the first son, Thomas Henry, and his descendents - the Norwich Inksons - are published. This is the tree page for Thomas Henry and his wife Emma Bezants née Wright. It is part of the English tree which seems to have withered as none of his known grandchildren seem to have had any children.
In completing the work it was necessary to update the 1939 general register page, below a December 2020 red marker.
27 December 2020 : a completely new section of the domain has been published : Trees and Indices. It is very early days so only the Norfolk Inkson set of trees [the tree is too big for a single page] is available at the moment but they are fully navigable and they do start early in the 18th century. Similarly, the indices are very limited and currently focus on the very early Inksons.
Over time the pop-up menus will be updated to provide a direct link to the new section.
20 December 2020 : the 1901 English census has now been searched again and two entries have been newly identified, Alice Inkson, one of the Chichester Inksons that had been mis-indexed as Jackson and an Alexander F Inkson from Scotland. The 1891 page has therefore been updated below a December 2020 red marker. The comments have also been updated and all links have been verified or corrected as necessary.
5 December 2020 : the 1891 English census has now been searched again and four entries have been newly identified, Sophia Inkson, daughter of Henry and Mary Ann Inkson [née Hood], William Inkson from Scotland and two brothers - sons of Alexander Falconer and Edith Inkson [née Foley] - Harold Foley Inkson and Norman Leopold Inkson. The 1891 page has therefore been updated below a December 2020 red marker. The comments have also been updated and all links have been verified or corrected as necessary.
28 November 2020 : we have come across another child of Thomas Harborow and Martha, unknown until now. Her name was Matilda May but she was only alive for a week or two. Surprisingly, she was born in a place called Bygrave, Hertfordhire where Thomas Harborow was the station master [something else unknown until now]. The tree page and the family group page for Thomas Harborow have been updated.
28 November 2020 : we now have the wedding certificate for William Chamberlain [see 10 November 2020 below] which shows that he did marry Mary Inkson née Black, the widow of John b. ABT 1814 so the 1871 page has therefore been updated, both in the body of the list and in the footnote. Now we need to look for any links between the Lincolnshire Chamberlains and the Norfolk Chamberlains.
27 November 2020 : the 1881 English census has now been searched again and two new entries have been identified, a John Inkson from Nova Scotia(!) and Grace Inkson, one of the Chichester Inksons. The 1881 page has therefore been updated below a November 2020 red marker. The comments have also been updated and all links have been verified or corrected as necessary.
24 November 2020 : following a lot of work and much assistance from other members of the family, the early history of Inksons in Kings Lynn has been pushed back two more generations :
... the 'landing' page for the period has been updated and the data has now been split out into a separate data page which has also been updated with new information;
... the tree page and the family group page for George Inkson [b. ABT 1710], father of George b. 1735, have been posted; unfortunately - for reasons explained in the section - we cannot yet identify the ancestry of this George;
... the tree page and the family group page for Thomas Inkson [b. ABT 1683] have been posted;
... the tree page for Mary Inkson [b. ABT 1713], daughter of Thomas Inkson [b. ABT 1683], have been posted;
... the tree page for Thomas Inkson [b. ABT 1722], son of Thomas Inkson [b. ABT 1683], have been posted;
... lastly, the process of changing the relevant line item on all of the dropdown menus from '18th Century' to '17th & 18th Century' has started; in the meantime, selecting the old title will still take you to the new landing page;
10 November 2020 : the 1871 English census has now been searched again but no new entries were found. Nonetheless, the 1871 page has been updated in order to bring the comments up to date.
One enigma found is the question of the Martineaus where it had previously been assumed that Mary Ann, the wife, was Mary Ann Inkson b. 1851. However, that marriage was only in 1887 so she must have been an earlier wife with the same given names. Why then are there Inksons staying with them and being called 'brother(s) in law'?
The second enigma, previously identified, is the description of the Inkson staying with William and Mary Chamberlain as a 'son in law'. There is now a possibility that Mary was actually Mary Inkson née Black, the widow of John b. ABT 1814 so he would have been a [step] son in law of William. A marriage certificate is being sought.
6 November 2020 : the 1861 English census has now been searched again and two new entries have been identified, a Jane Inkson from Scotland and a Frederick Inkston who is assumed to be Frederick William Inkson b. 1842, the eldest son of John b. ABT 1814 and Mary. The 1861 page has therefore been updated below the November 2020 red marker.
5 November 2020 : following yesterday's postings, the appearances in the English censuses of Susanna Chamberlain née Inkson [b. ABT 1781], daughter of George and Margaret, and her family have been added to the 1841, 1851 and 1861 pages. Red marker notes have been set to show where the new records start on each page.
4 November 2020 : following a lot more investigation, the last known branches of the tree below George [b. ABT 1735] have been added :
... the tree page and the family group page for Mary Inkson [b. ABT 1770], daughter of George and Margaret, have been posted;
... the tree page for Sarah Inkson [b. ABT 1780], daughter of George and Margaret, has been posted; there is no family group page for Sarah because there are no known children of her marriage;
... the tree page and the family group page for Susanna Inkson [b. ABT 1781], daughter of George and Margaret, have been posted; this is a potentially very interesting line because she married a Chamberlain and we know that Grimsby Chamberlains were sheltering Inkson youngsters in the 1871 census;
29 October 2020 : an important error has been corrected. It was thought that George [b. ABT 1735] had been buried in 1811 with a burial of a George the Elder being overlooked and the life of George [b. ABT 1761] being unknown. The much more likely scenario is that George [b. ABT 1735] was buried in 1783 as George the Elder and that George [b. ABT 1761] survived until 1811. This is strongly supported by the probate record of the George who died in 1811 wherein he leaves some of his estate to his sisters Sarah and Susanna.
26 October 2020 : the tree page and the family group page for William Inkson [b. ABT 1756], son of George [b. ABT 1735], have been posted. William's son George [b. Feb 1782] married Mary Turnbull in 1804.
26 October 2020 : a major iteration of the 'landing' page for the English Inksons in the 18th century has been posted. There is quite a lot of additional information presented and it now includes the start of a section index for the first time.
21 October 2020 : the tree page and the family group page for George Inkson [b. ABT 1735], father of Thomas [b. ABT 1772], have been posted. He remarried after his first wife died so it is a complex family. He had another two sons - William [b. ABT 1756] and George [b. ABT 1761] - who may have survived into adulthood so they will be investigated next.
17 October 2020 : work has started on pushing the tree back into the 18th century which required structural changes to the pages for the 1801 Inkson - Harborow marriage. New information also came to light so the pages were also updated. There is now a 'landing' page for the marriage and both the tree page and family group page are up to date [which doesn't mean they won't need updating again!]. Please note that, although they work, the links back to Thomas' parents just take you to holding pages for now.
12 October 2020 : we now have the birth certificate of Charles INKSON [aka DOSSETT] and have undertaken a lot more investigation into Charles and Albert Arthur, possibly two children of Frederick William I... [b. 1842]. Charles disappears without trace after the 1871 census and was probably the Charles Joseph who drowned at sea in 1879. Albert Arthur, on the other hand went on to have children and grandchildren so new pages have been created for him and his two sons who survived to adulthood, albeit all as Dossetts not Inksons. Perhaps start at Frederick William's tree page and tunnel down from there.
The investigation has meant that the census pages for 1891, 1901, 1911 and the 1939 general register all had to be updated. Red marker notes have been set to show where the new records start on each page.
5 October 2020 : receipt of the birth certificate of Albert [Albert Arthur] INKSON [aka DOSSETT] means that his pages will have to be updated. It shows that his father was a Henry Dorsett and that his mother was Ellen Dorsett née Peplow [not that it helps too much as neither person is clearly identifiable in the records and it doesn't explain why she was called Eliza when she married Frederick William Inkson : time to get the birth certificate for his brother Charles
2 October 2020 : the tree and family group pages for Frederick William I... [b. 1842], the son of John [b. 1814] have been updated with latest available information; that includes draft pages for the children, two of whom may or may not be the children of Frederick William
29 September 2020 : following a cross-reference check with census records, another son [John Thomas b. 16 Apr 1839] has been added to the pages that were updated yesterday for John I...
28 September 2020 : the index, tree and family group pages for John I... [b. 1814] have been updated with latest available information; that includes notes added for some of the children
23 September 2020 : following a thorough search of the 1841 English census records on line at ancestry.com, that page has had a major update with four extra returns; a red marker note has been set to show where the new records start; during the research a wedding record was found for Lewis Inkson [b. 1773] so the 18th century page was also updated
21 September 2020 : following a thorough search of the 1911 English census records on line at ancestry.com, that page has had a major update with the number of returns almost tripling; a red marker note has been set to show where the new records start
16 September 2020 : the tree and family group pages for William I... [b. 1804] have been updated with latest available information; that includes notes added for some of the children
June to August 2020 : the major changes include a floating main menu at the bottom right of new pages, a complete rework of the census section [including the addition of the 1939 Register] and the start of work on the 18th century records.
