Cyril George INKSON b. 14 September 1911 Lewisham, London
Family Tree
Cyril George was the second child of George Harborow b. 29 Sep 1873 and Bridget Mary née Keatinge. At the time of his birth, the family were living in Lewisham, south east London, presumably because George Harborow was sailing out of London docks.
George Harborow came ashore in early 1928 as a result of illness when Cyril George was just 16. He had to leave school before matriculating and start working to bring money into the family. He followed his father into the Union Castle Line but as shore staff rather than as a sea-going crew member. Other than during his war service he worked for Union Castle until retiring, again as a result of illness.
Cyril George was a good sportsman in his youth and did a lot of work for charity over the years. He played football for St Mary's College and then the Old Simmarians. He played cricket for the Old Simmarians and also Union Castle. He ran the Old Simmarians for many years as Secretary + Treasurer and raised money for the school's Scholarship Fund, running a weekly Whist Drive with Jenny his wife. They also raised a lot of money together for Portswood Catholic Church, organising a weekly Bingo evening.
During WWII he served in India and Burma and was mentioned in despatches.
